The people in Thailand appreciate your support!
As a young company focused on Thai cuisine, we asked ourselves: "What can we do for Thailand?"
In the villages of Thailand, we searched for a storage solution that fits our cooking box. The question arose of how we can store beautiful things in a way that we can enjoy them for a long time. That's when we noticed the handcrafted bamboo boxes.
Here live our artisans
Current situation
Bamboo products have been rooted in Thai culture for a long time. Many people, especially older women in Cholburi, Ayutthaya, and Udon Thani, make a living from their production. They craft a variety of bamboo products by hand and sell them directly on-site.
The elderly have no access to other distribution channels and are therefore reliant on local sales, which only generate minimal income. To secure their survival, the villagers must also grow fruit or rice on the side.
This work is hard and physically demanding and exhausting, especially for older people. Many families have therefore already given up hope of continuing their profession. In personal conversations with the workers, the reasons for this development quickly became clear: The younger generation sees no future in the old trade, as the earning potential is too low to support their own family later on. Instead, the children of worker families are moving to factories because it is easier to earn money there. The art of making products from bamboo is therefore becoming increasingly rare to pass on to the next generation. Thus, this craft and with it a piece of Thai culture is at risk of becoming irretrievably extinct in the future. We would find that very unfortunate, which is why we have thought about how we can support the worker families.
What can we do?
We financially support older women with their projects and also help find new, including international customers for them. We provide them access to the online market to increase their sales. The largest customer so far is a hotel in Dubai, which uses the bamboo products to decorate its rooms. We are still looking for ways to make the new bamboo products more well-known. If you or someone you know is interested, feel free to contact us directly. We will then take care of the organization and consulting for you free of charge. It is important to us that the older people in the village are better off in the long term.
Workshop with KONKRUA
Furthermore, we have organized free workshops for children who want to learn the art and craft of making bamboo products. Many schools in the area participated in the workshops. We had a lot of fun together.
In the context of the workshops, the younger generations learn how to creatively work with bamboo and subsequently master basic manufacturing techniques. This gives the children a sense of the beauty of their culture and allows them to create bamboo products in their free time. We hope to make a small contribution to the preservation of this traditional craft.
At the end, there is always delicious coconut ice cream and lots of laughter!
Furthermore, our customers also support many local farmers and small producers in Thailand through their purchase.
Roi-Et is one of the best cultivation areas for jasmine scented rice in Thailand. Our rice was also born here.
